Dr. Roxy Etta

A professional portfolio and blog

Welcome

Hi, I’m Dr. Roxy Etta.

I recently received a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from UW-Madison’s School of Human Ecology. I am passionate about the ecology of young children’s education and well-being, and the role that parents and early childhood educators play in shaping children’s experiences. I am specifically interested in children’s educational media design and media mentorship.

 It’s nice to meet you.

Why Media?

Children’s media habits are rapidly changing. This is because mobile screen devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are becoming increasingly accessible to families. Now more than ever, children have media at their fingertips – anytime and anywhere.

Media is here to stay. Almost all children (98%) have access to at least one mobile screen device in their home.

On average, children spend two hours and nineteen minutes a day with screen media.

Compared to previous years, children do not seem to be spending more time with media, but they are spending their time differently.

  • Mobile Device 35% 35%
  • TV 42% 42%
  • Video 12% 12%
  • Computer/Video Games 11% 11%

Children spend the most time with television (58 minutes), but mobile screen device use takes close second (48 minutes). Researchers are still attempting to understand the affordances of these new media in homes and schools.

Researchers like Roxy are trying to identify methods that enhance the positive potential of media. More research is greatly needed to identify how these emerging technologies can be best used in various settings, both formally in school and informally in the home.
